Overview

The Boise National Forest encompasses 2.5 million acres of diverse terrain northeast of Boise, Idaho, ranging from 2,800 feet elevation at the North Fork Payette River Canyon to nearly 10,000 feet at Trinity Mountain. The forest is currently open with typical seasonal conditions. Active alerts include: Granite Creek Road (NFS 327) closed to wheeled motorized vehicles for winter snowmobile grooming season; portions of Lava Fire burn area roads (625, 653, 624) remain closed to motorized/mechanized travel but open to foot and livestock use; ongoing salvage logging operations near the Flat Fire burn area with temporary road closures through December 31, 2025; portions of William Pogue and Roaring River Trails closed; and several camping area restrictions along Highway 21 to allow recovery from overuse. The forest maintains low fire danger in the Boise Mountains area and moderate in the Snake River & Foothills zones. Standard 14-day camping limits apply. Be prepared for winter conditions on forest roads—they are not plowed and can be covered with snow and ice. The forest offers 500+ trails, 250+ lakes and reservoirs, 70 campgrounds, and extensive winter recreation opportunities including snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
