Closed — Closed for the season due to snow. The cabin typically becomes accessible in early July after late snow melt and operates through the summer and early fall. The area is at 7,900 feet elevation and snow makes it inaccessible during winter months.

About

Big Trinity Cabin offers a quiet retreat in a beautiful high alpine landscape within the Boise National Forest. The historic guard station is situated at 7,900 feet elevation in a dense lodgepole pine forest, nestled among four subalpine lakes: Big Trinity Lake, Little Trinity Lake, Big Roaring River Lake, and Little Roaring River Lake. Trinity Mountain, the tallest peak in the Boise Range at 9,451 feet, rises just to the south. The cabin sleeps six people and is equipped with one double bed, a sofa bed, a drop-down kitchen table, chairs, cookware, dishes, and cleaning supplies. A wood stove provides heating and cooking capabilities, with seasoned wood, a splitting maul, axe, and hatchet provided. Outside amenities include a picnic table, campfire ring with grill, and a vault toilet. Drinking water is available from a nearby hand pump. The area offers excellent recreation opportunities including fishing for rainbow and cutthroat trout in nearby lakes, hiking on the 4-mile Rainbow Basin Trail system, and wildlife watching for elk, deer, and occasional black bears. Motorized trails including Roaring River Trail 045 and Lava Mountain Trail 125 are also accessible. The summit of Trinity Mountain offers panoramic views from the lookout tower, accessible via the highest drivable point in Idaho. The cabin has no electricity or propane, and guests must pack out all trash and provide their own bedding and lighting.

Directions

Travel east from Boise on I-84 to Mountain Home. At I-84/Highway 20 junction, take Highway 20 east for 35 miles to Pine/Featherville turnoff. Travel north on Forest Highway 61 for 29 miles to Forest Road 172. Travel 15 miles northwest to Forest Road 129. Travel 3 miles to the Guard Station junction. The roadway is paved up to the junction of Forest Road 172. Forest Road 172 is native material (dirt) and trailer traffic is not recommended.
