About

Deadwood Lookout Recreation Cabin is a historic Forest Service fire lookout built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Perched atop Deadwood Mountain at 7,482 feet elevation, the cabin served as an active fire lookout until 1972 and has since become one of the most popular rental cabins in Idaho. The rustic 14x14-ft. structure is equipped with two single beds with mattresses that can be fastened together, a wood stove for heating and cooking, a wood counter with shelf, and a table with two chairs. A vault toilet is located outside and below the lookout. No potable water, electricity, or firewood is provided, so guests must bring all supplies including water, bedding, cookware, and firewood. A picnic table and campfire ring are available outside. The cabin offers unobstructed sunrise views, stunning sunsets, and exceptional stargazing. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot elk, deer, bear, and occasionally bull moose in the surrounding area. Hikers and mountain bikers have access to nearby trails including Scott Mountain, Julie Creek, and Nellie's Basin. Be aware that various snake species including rattlesnakes are present when temperatures reach 70-82 degrees.
