About
Deadwood Lookout Recreation Cabin is one of Idaho's most popular rental cabins, a historic Forest Service fire lookout built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps on Deadwood Mountain. The structure served as an active fire lookout until 1972 and is the third lookout to occupy this site. Sitting at an elevation of 7,482 feet, the cabin provides unobstructed 360-degree panoramic views of Boise National Forest. The 14x14-foot rustic cabin features two single beds with mattresses that can be fastened together, a wood stove for heating and cooking, a wood counter with shelf, and a table with two chairs. An exterior catwalk surrounds the cabin for taking in sunrise and sunset views. Below the lookout, guests will find a vault toilet, picnic table, and campfire ring. No water, electricity, or firewood is provided. Guests must bring all water, bedding, cookware, utensils, and trash bags. The cabin is surrounded by wildflower meadows and conifer forests. Wildlife including elk, deer, black bear, and occasionally bull moose inhabit the area. Nearby trails include Scott Mountain, Julie Creek, Nellie's Basin, and the popular Deadwood Ridge Trail. Access requires a high-clearance vehicle for the narrow, steep, winding dirt road (Forest Road 555EC). The cabin is typically accessible from late June through mid-October, with snow conditions affecting seasonal opening and closing dates.
