About

Penn Basin Campground offers 6 primitive campsites in a tranquil mountain meadow setting within the Boise National Forest, near Landmark, Idaho. The campground sits near Johnson Creek, a tributary of the South Fork Salmon River, surrounded by mountain slopes covered in dense pine forest. This remote location provides excellent opportunities for wildlife watching, with deer, elk, bear, and moose frequently seen in the area, and bald eagles often spotted overhead. The campground serves as a base for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians exploring the surrounding backcountry. Fishing is available in nearby streams. The community of Yellow Pine, located about 28 miles north, hosts an annual Music and Harmonica Festival each August. Each site includes a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. Vault toilets are provided, but campers must bring their own drinking water as no potable water is available on site.

Directions

From Boise, travel north on State Highway 55 approximately 80 miles to Cascade. From Cascade, continue north on Highway 55 a short distance to the Warm Lake Road (Forest Highway 22) turnoff. Take Forest Highway 22 northeast approximately 25 miles. In the Warm Lake area, Forest Highway 22 becomes Forest Service Road 579. Continue east on FS Road 579 until it intersects with FS Road 413, approximately 10 miles. Turn south at the intersection and proceed approximately 3 miles to Penn Basin Campground.
