About
Penn Basin Campground near Landmark, Idaho, offers 6 campsites in a peaceful, remote setting near mountain slopes covered in dense pine forest. The campground sits in a pretty mountain meadow close to scenic Johnson Creek, a tributary of the South Fork Salmon River, at an elevation above 7,000 feet. The area provides excellent opportunities for wildlife watching, with frequent sightings of mule deer, elk, bear, and moose. Bald eagles are often spotted soaring overhead, and wildflowers bloom throughout the summer months. The South Fork Salmon River and Johnson Creek offer fishing opportunities, while the surrounding area features non-motorized and motorized trails popular with hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Berry picking and hunting are also popular activities in season. The campground can be accessed by most vehicles, though the road is narrow and may be rough in spots. The tiny community of Yellow Pine, established in 1902 and located approximately 28 miles north, offers limited services and hosts the popular Yellow Pine Music & Harmonica Festival annually in August.
