About
Golden Gate Campground sits at approximately 4,900 feet elevation in a scenic mountain meadow surrounded by dense pine forest in the remote backcountry of the Boise National Forest. The 9-site campground provides a peaceful setting near Johnson Creek, a tributary of the South Fork Salmon River known for its fishing opportunities. Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. Two vault toilets serve the campground, but there is no potable water available, so campers must bring an adequate supply. The campground serves as a base for exploring the nearby Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, the largest contiguous wilderness area in the lower 48 states. Multiple trailheads in the area provide access for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Wildlife is abundant, with frequent sightings of deer, elk, bear, and moose, while bald eagles often soar overhead. The South Fork Salmon River and Johnson Creek offer opportunities for fishing. Access to the campground requires travel on narrow, sometimes rough forest roads. From Cascade, take Warm Lake Road (Forest Highway 22) northeast approximately 25 miles, then continue on Forest Service Road 579 for about 10 miles to FS Road 413, then travel north approximately 23 miles to the campground. The tiny historic community of Yellow Pine, established in 1902, is located just north of the campground and offers limited services. Cell service is not available in this area.
Directions
