About
Graham Cabin is a former Forest Service Guard Station located on the North Fork Boise River at 5,720 feet elevation, directly adjacent to the Sawtooth Wilderness. This remote rental cabin sits in an open grassy area surrounded by the rugged mountain peaks of the Sawtooth Range dotted with evergreens, with some visible remnants of past forest fires. Access to the cabin requires commitment and proper equipment. The 53-mile route from Idaho City takes a minimum 3 hours by high clearance 4WD vehicle on extremely rocky, rutted roads with a mandatory river ford. Alternatively, visitors can fly into the adjacent airstrip, generally snow-free from late May to early October, or arrive on horseback via the 6-mile Horse Heaven Trail or by riding the last 10 miles of Road 312. The cabin sleeps 6 people and provides basic amenities; guests should bring additional supplies for a comfortable stay. Several trails within 2 miles offer superb horseback riding, including the Horse Heaven Trail. Hikers can follow the river to its headwaters in the Sawtooth Wilderness, while motorcyclists enjoy the surrounding roads. Fishing is good in both the river and nearby Johnson Creek. Big game hunting is popular in season. Wildlife watchers may spot elk, deer, mountain goats, wolves, coyotes, cougars, bobcats, bears, and occasionally wolverines.
Directions
From Idaho City, travel north on Highway 21 for 18 miles to Forest Service Road 384 (Crooked River/Little Owl Road). Turn left and proceed 4 miles to FS Road 312 (Pikes Fork Road). Turn right and travel approximately 26 miles, bearing right at the 2 major intersections and following directional signs. High clearance 4WD required; you must ford the North Fork Boise River. Plan minimum 3 hours from Idaho City. Alternatively, accessible via adjacent airstrip or horseback via 6-mile Horse Heaven Trail from FS Road 327.
