About

Grayback Campground is located in the Boise National Forest just off Highway 21 (Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway), approximately 36 miles northeast of Boise. The campground sits on a hillside at 4,200 feet elevation, surrounded by ponderosa pine forest that provides partial shade. Historic Idaho City, with its Gold Rush-era heritage, is just two miles north. The campground offers 15 single sites and 3 double sites, each with a paved parking spot, picnic table, lantern hook, and campfire ring. Vault toilets and potable water via hand pumps are available. Two group sites accommodate larger gatherings: Site A holds up to 150 people and 20 vehicles, Site B up to 100 people and 15 vehicles. Mores Creek flows below the campground, providing fishing for whitefish and rainbow trout. The Grayback Loop Trail offers an easy 1-mile hike directly from camp. The area north of Idaho City provides additional trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

Directions

From Boise, take State Highway 21 north for 36 miles. The campground access road is on the east side of the highway between mileposts 36 and 37. Turn right and travel a quarter-mile up a steep, one-lane access road with sharp turns.
