About
Grayback Campground is situated 36 miles northeast of Boise along the scenic Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway (Highway 21), just two miles south of historic Idaho City. Perched on a hillside at 4,200 feet elevation, the campground is enveloped by a ponderosa pine forest that provides partial shade and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities. Summer wildflowers add color to the landscape during the peak season. The campground offers excellent recreation access, with Mores Creek just below the site providing fishing opportunities for rainbow trout and whitefish. The Grayback Loop Trail, a 1-mile footpath, begins within the campground and is perfect for casual hikers. Beyond the immediate area, numerous trails north of Idaho City accommodate hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and off-road vehicles, while winter transforms the region into a playground for backcountry skiers and snowmobilers. Both reservable and first-come, first-served campsites are available, with single sites, double-family sites, and two large group sites. Each campsite includes a picnic table, lantern post, and campfire ring with grill. The two group sites feature picnic and serving tables, grills, campfire circles, and paved pads, accommodating groups of 100-150 people. The campground provides vault toilets and potable water during the operating season.
