About

Buck Mountain Campground is a small, peaceful campground located in a pretty mountain meadow near Landmark, Idaho within the Boise National Forest. The campground sits a stone's throw from scenic Johnson Creek, a tributary of the South Fork Salmon River, surrounded by mountain slopes covered in dense pine forest. The campground offers 4 primitive campsites, each equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. A vault toilet is available, but there is no potable water, so campers must bring their own. The access road is narrow and may be rough in spots, making it unsuitable for large RVs. The trailhead for the McClure/Burntlog trail is near the campground, making it a popular destination for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. The South Fork Salmon River and Johnson Creek offer fishing opportunities. Wildlife watchers may see deer, elk, bear, and moose, while bald eagles are often spotted soaring overhead. The tiny community of Yellow Pine, approximately 20 miles north, offers limited services.

Directions

From Boise, travel north on State Highway 55 approximately 80 miles to Cascade. From Cascade, travel north on Highway 55 a short distance to the Warm Lake Road (Forest Highway 22). Proceed northeast approximately 25 miles. At Warm Lake, Forest Highway 22 becomes FS Road 579. Continue east on FS Road 579 until it intersects with FS Road 413, approximately 10 miles. Turn north on FS Road 413 and Buck Mountain Campground will be just past Landmark on the right side of the road, approximately 3 miles.
