About

South Fork Salmon River Campground is a small, peaceful USFS campground with 11 sites set in a scenic forest of old-growth ponderosa pine that provides partial shade. Located near Warm Lake in the Cascade Ranger District of Boise National Forest, the campground sits along Chipmunk Creek in an area rich with summer wildflowers and butterflies. Several campsites are positioned along the river while others are on the slope above. The campground serves as a quieter alternative to the busier Warm Lake campgrounds while still providing easy access to lake recreation including swimming at Billy Rice Swim Beach, boating, and fishing for cutthroat, rainbow, lake, and bull trout. The South Fork Salmon River offers fishing opportunities, and in September visitors can observe chinook salmon that have traveled 700 miles from the Pacific Ocean to spawn at the nearby fish viewing site. Recreation opportunities abound in the surrounding area. The WeWuKiye Trail No. 252 at nearby Shoreline Campground is popular for hiking and mountain biking. OHV enthusiasts can access Telephone Ridge Trail No. 112, which offers 20 miles of trails for all riding levels. The area supports diverse wildlife including bears, deer, elk, fox, grouse, eagles, osprey, and otters. Each campsite includes a picnic table and fire ring. The campground has vault toilets and potable water.
