About
Deer Park Cabin traces its origins to 1913 when the site was established as Deer Park Ranger Guard Station. The original 1917 cabin was replaced in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the structure retains its historic character today. Situated at approximately 4,400 feet in an open meadow lined with mature Ponderosa pines, the cabin provides a peaceful basecamp for exploring the Boise National Forest backcountry. The cabin accommodates up to six guests on one futon and two sets of bunkbeds with mattresses (bedding not provided). The kitchen includes a table and chairs, cookware, dishes, utensils, a propane oven, refrigerator, and dry sink. A propane stove provides heat. There is no electricity, so guests should bring flashlights or lanterns. Potable water is available from a hand pump in an adjacent shed, and a vault toilet outhouse serves restroom needs. Outside, a picnic table and campfire ring are provided, and garbage collection is available. The North Fork Boise River Trail begins directly behind the cabin, leading hikers through 5 miles of dramatic canyon scenery. Horse Heaven Trail, about a mile away, connects to the Swanholm/Warrior trail system and is open to hikers, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and motorcyclists. Rainbow trout fishing in the river typically improves after July 1st, and big game hunting is popular in the surrounding area.
