About
The Barber Flat Cabin site was established for administrative use by the Forest Service in 1923, originally utilizing structures from the Barber Lumber Company. The current cabin and outbuildings were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 and retain much of their historic character. The cabin sleeps six people on two futons and one bunkbed, with a kitchen equipped with propane stove, refrigerator, sink with hot water, cookware, and dishes. The bathroom includes a sink, bathtub, and flush toilet. A wood stove provides heat, with firewood available from the surrounding forest. Located near the North Fork Boise River at approximately 4,300 feet elevation, the cabin sits among towering Ponderosa pines beneath Hungarian Ridge in the Boise Mountains. The area is known for osprey nests and wildlife including mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk, chukars, wild turkeys, eagles, and occasional black bears or wolves. The river offers excellent rainbow trout fishing and swimming holes. Several multi-use trails run east and west from the cabin. The Barber Flat Trailhead is nearby, and the Hungarian/Sunset Trail is located about 200 yards north. Other area trails include the Beaver Creek/Grand Mountain Trail and Short Creek Trail, known for nesting ospreys. The cabin is accessible via graded two-wheel drive roads, though conditions can be rough. Guests must bring their own bedding, pillows, towels, and light sources as the cabin has no electricity.
Directions
From Idaho City, take State Highway 21 for 2 miles to Granite Creek Road #327. Turn right and travel approximately 25 miles to the cabin. The road becomes North Fork Boise River Road.
