About
Barber Flat Cabin has a rich history dating back to the early 1920s when it served the Barber Lumber Company and later the Forest Service as a guard station. The current cabin was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 and retains much of its original character. Situated beneath Hungarian Ridge along the North Fork Boise River, the cabin offers a secluded retreat surrounded by towering Ponderosa pines. The cabin accommodates six guests on two futons and one bunkbed (mattresses provided, but bring your own bedding). The kitchen includes a propane stove, refrigerator, cookware, dishes, and a sink with hot water. The bathroom features a flush toilet, bathtub, and sink. A wood stove provides heat, with firewood available from the surrounding forest. There is no electricity. Outdoor amenities include a picnic table and campfire ring. The Barber Flat Trailhead is nearby, and the Hungarian/Sunset Trail starts about 200 yards north. The area is known for osprey nests, mule deer, elk, wild turkeys, and occasional black bears. The river offers rainbow trout fishing and swimming holes.
Directions
From Idaho City, take State Highway 21 for 2 miles to Granite Creek Road (Forest Road 327). Turn right and travel approximately 25 miles to the cabin. The road becomes North Fork Boise River Road. Drive carefully as this road is heavily traveled.
