About

Ice Hole Campground sits in a scenic mountain meadow surrounded by dense pine forest in the remote backcountry of Boise National Forest. Located along Johnson Creek near its confluence with the South Fork Salmon River, this primitive 10-site campground serves as a gateway to the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, the largest contiguous wilderness area in the lower 48 states. Wildlife is abundant in this area, with deer, elk, bear, and moose frequently spotted. Bald eagles soar overhead, and the nearby streams offer fishing opportunities. The campground is popular with hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians accessing wilderness trailheads. Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. This is a truly primitive experience with no potable water, no cell service, and no hookups. Campers should come fully self-sufficient and prepared for remote backcountry conditions. The access road is narrow and may be rough in spots, though passable by most vehicles.
