About

Bald Mountain Campground offers a quiet, primitive camping experience in the Boise National Forest. Located approximately 14 miles from Idaho City via Forest Service roads, this small campground features just four campsites in a secluded, forested setting. Each site is equipped with a campfire ring, grill, and picnic table. Vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water available on-site. The campground serves as a base for various recreational activities including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and OHV use. A trail from the campground heads east to the Middle Fork of the Boise River, while another trail from nearby Thorn Creek Butte Lookout follows Cottonwood Creek southward. The area offers excellent scenery and opportunities for wildlife viewing. Due to its remote location and high elevation, the campground is only accessible seasonally from July through September, or until snow closes the access roads. During winter months, the water pumps are locked but toilets remain open for snowmobile users passing through the area.

Directions

From Idaho City, Idaho, travel 1 mile north on State Highway 21 to the turnoff for Forest Service Road 304. Turn right and proceed approximately 13 miles along FS Road 304. At the intersection with FS Road 203, follow it south 1/3 mile to Bald Mountain Campground.
