About

Trout Creek Campground offers a secluded camping experience in the Boise National Forest with just 5 sites set in a scenic mountain meadow surrounded by dense pine forest. The campground sits near Johnson Creek and provides a tranquil basecamp for exploring the backcountry. The area is popular with hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians seeking access to the Frank Church - River of No Return Wilderness and the Thunderbolt Lookout trail. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with deer, elk, bear, moose, and bald eagles commonly spotted in the area. Fishing is available on the South Fork Salmon River and Johnson Creek, and berry picking and hunting are popular seasonal activities. Facilities are basic: vault toilets, fire rings with grills, and picnic tables at each site. Campers must bring their own drinking water as no potable water is available. The campground is reached via a narrow, sometimes rough forest road requiring approximately 8 miles of travel on FS road 413 after turning off FS road 579.

Directions

From Boise, travel north on Highway 55 approximately 80 miles to Cascade, then continue north a short distance to Warm Lake Road (Forest Highway 22). Travel northeast approximately 25 miles. At Warm Lake, the road becomes FS Road 579. Continue east on FS Road 579 approximately 10 miles to the intersection with FS Road 413, then turn north on FS Road 413 and proceed 8 miles to the campground.
