About

Shafer Butte Campground is a tent-only facility perched at 7,000 feet elevation atop the scenic Boise Ridge Mountains, approximately 20 miles from Boise via Bogus Basin Road. Located near Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area, the campground offers breathtaking views of Deer Point, Mores Mountain, and Shafer Butte summits, as well as sweeping vistas of the valley below. The campground is nestled among Douglas fir and aspen trees that provide partial shade across most sites. Single-family campsites and double sites are available, along with two accessible day-use group picnic areas that can accommodate 30 and 50 people respectively. Sites are equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings, and many overnight campsites feature tent pads. Accessible vault toilets are provided, though no potable water is currently available on-site. The area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with the family-friendly Mores Mountain Trail beginning right in the campground. This 2-mile interpretive nature trail is just one part of the extensive Shafer Butte Trail System, which offers excellent opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Summer wildflowers are abundant, and wildlife sightings are common. The nearby Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area and Ridge to Rivers trail system provide additional recreation opportunities. Access requires driving the final three miles on a gravel road.

Directions

From Boise, travel along Bogus Basin Road (Forest Service Road 297) for approximately 20 miles. Continue past the ski area and Nordic center. The final three miles are on a gravel road. Turn right (east) at the campground sign and travel just over a mile to the Shafer Butte Campground.
