ESCCRP PANORAMA PROJECT AREA CLOSURE

To provide for public safety while contractors perform forest health and fuels reduction work for the Panorama portion of the ESCCRP project.

Overview

Inyo National Forest (Eastern Sierra, CA) is open for the 2026 season, but there are several active items an expert camper should plan around. Reds Meadow Road (access to Devils Postpile, Rainbow Falls, and the Reds Meadow trailheads) is tentatively scheduled to open July 2, 2026 and close around November 1, 2026, with access primarily Thursday-Sunday and mandatory ESTA shuttle use during peak season — the road remains closed to all traffic (including bikes/e-bikes/pedestrians) outside those windows due to ongoing reconstruction. Wilderness permits are required for all overnight trips and many day hikes; the Mt. Whitney Zone is under a forest order with $15/person fees ($5/person elsewhere), and a separate ESCCRP Panorama Project Area closure is in effect. Campfires are prohibited in portions of the Ansel Adams, John Muir, Golden Trout, and Hoover Wildernesses on Inyo NF, and a California Campfire Permit is required for any stove or open flame outside developed campgrounds. Stage 1 fire restrictions historically begin in mid-June as fuels dry — verify current status before your trip. Bohler Canyon Road (1N106) has a major washout and may not be passable. Snowpack and runoff in the Eastern Sierra mean higher trailheads (Bishop Pass, Piute, Bishop Creek drainages, Kearsarge) often don't fully melt out until late June/July; check trail conditions and stream crossings. Bear canisters are required in much of the John Muir/Ansel Adams Wildernesses.
