About

Bald Mountain Cabin is a historic log cabin warming hut located at the summit of Bald Mountain in Inyo National Forest, offering breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views from its 9,104-foot elevation. Originally constructed in 1943 by the Civilian Public Service during World War II, the site includes both the historic cabin warming hut and a fire lookout that has been reactivated for fire detection. The warming hut is open to the public and maintained by the Mammoth Lakes Snowmobile Association in cooperation with the Inyo National Forest. It serves as a relief shelter from the elements for winter recreationists including snowmobilers, backcountry skiers, and snowshoers. During summer months, the site is accessible via the 23-mile round trip Bald Mountain Road loop, which leaves Highway 395 at the top of Deadman Summit. This is a primitive site with no amenities. No water, restrooms, or other facilities are available. Visitors must be completely self-sufficient and prepared for high-elevation mountain conditions. The cabin provides basic shelter only and is intended as a warming hut rather than overnight accommodation, though it is available for emergency use.

Directions

From Highway 395 at the top of Deadman Summit, turn onto Logging Camp Road. Follow Forest Road 1S05 for approximately 11 miles to Bald Mountain. Stay on 1S05 and follow signs to Bald Mountain Lookout.
