About
Cedar Flat Group Campground sits in the White Mountains east of Owens Valley within Inyo National Forest at 7,300 feet elevation. The three group sites—Camp Nelson, Camp Noren, and Camp Ferguson—occupy an arid landscape dotted with pinyon and juniper trees, rabbit brush, and sage. The remote location with no nearby light sources makes it a prime destination for stargazing and astrophotography. The campground is particularly popular with academic institutions conducting geology field trips. Each group site features vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables with shade ramadas. Potable water is not available; the nearest supplies, food, and fuel are 12 miles away in Big Pine. Campers should come prepared for primitive conditions at elevation. Nearby attractions include the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, home to the oldest living trees on Earth, and White Mountain Peak at 14,246 feet—California's third highest summit. Highway 168 to the campground is narrow and steep with a single-lane section and limited visibility; uphill traffic has right-of-way.
Directions
From Big Pine, go east on Highway 168 approximately 11.5 miles and turn left into the campground entrance. The junction with White Mountain Road (to the Bristlecone Pines) is about 0.5 miles beyond the campground. Highway 168 is narrow and steep with a single-lane section and limited visibility. Uphill traffic has right-of-way; be prepared to back up to the last wide spot if necessary.
