About

Mosquito Flat Backpacker Campground sits at 10,100 feet elevation at the end of Rock Creek Road in Inyo National Forest, serving as a staging area for backpackers heading into the John Muir Wilderness. The campground features 10 walk-in campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis for single-night use only. Campers must possess a valid wilderness permit for either the Mono Pass or Little Lakes Valley trailheads for the following day. This is an active bear area, and all food storage must be in the provided bear boxes, which measure 48" x 30" x 36". The campground provides vault toilets and picnic tables at each site, but no drinking water is available, so visitors must bring their own. There are no fees for camping. Quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., and dogs must be leashed in the campground. Access is via Rock Creek Road (Forest Service Road 12), approximately 10 miles from Tom's Place on Highway 395. The road is closed in winter, typically making the campground inaccessible from late fall through late spring or early summer depending on snow conditions. The campground experiences heavy use during the summer season due to its proximity to popular trailheads in Little Lakes Valley.

Directions

Exit Highway 395 at Tom's Place, approximately 13 miles south of Mammoth Lakes and 30 miles north of Bishop. Follow Rock Creek Road (Forest Service Road 12) west for about 10 miles to the end of the road at Mosquito Flat.
