About

Situated at 9,200 feet elevation in the Onion Valley area of the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, this campground offers 29 campsites nestled among lodgepole pines, aspens, and shrubs with a stream running alongside. The campground serves as a popular hub for hikers accessing the John Muir Wilderness through nearby Kearsarge Pass, Robinson Lake, and Golden Trout Lakes trailheads, with routes leading to alpine lakes, mountain peaks, and into Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park. The eastern Sierras provide exceptional trout fishing opportunities, with anglers targeting rainbow, brown, brook, and Alpers trout in Robinson Lake and nearby creeks. Wildlife is abundant, including black bears which frequently visit the campground, mountain lions, mule deer, pine martin, pika, and numerous bird species. Late spring and early summer bring colorful wildflower displays across the landscape. The campground features vault toilets and bear-proof food storage lockers at every site, which must be used due to high bear activity. Sites accommodate RVs up to 25 feet, and firewood is available for purchase. The location is 15 miles west of Independence via Onion Valley Road, which is typically open from May to November depending on snow conditions.
