About
Camp Noren is one of three large group sites at Cedar Flat Group Campground in the Inyo National Forest, situated east of the Owens Valley in the White Mountains at 7,300 feet elevation. Popular with academic institutions for geology field trips, this site can accommodate up to 25 people and features a shade ramada with picnic table, campfire ring, and vault toilet. The campsite is surrounded by an arid landscape dotted with pinyon and juniper trees, rabbit brush, and sage. With no nearby light sources, Cedar Flat offers brilliant night skies ideal for stargazing and night photography. The location provides easy access to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, home to the oldest living trees in the world, and White Mountain Peak, the third highest peak in California at 14,246 feet. Hikers and geology enthusiasts will find abundant opportunities for exploration in this unique high desert environment. Campers must bring all necessary water, as none is available on-site and there is no natural water source nearby. The nearest source for water, food, firewood, and fuel is 12 miles away in Big Pine. Highway 168 is narrow and steep with a section of single lane road with very limited visibility, so visitors should be prepared for challenging driving conditions, especially those with RVs or large vehicles.
Directions
From Big Pine go east on Highway 168 approximately 11.5 miles and turn left into the campground entrance. The junction of Highway 168 and White Mountain Road is about 0.5 miles beyond the campground entrance. Highway 168 is narrow and steep with a section of single lane road with very limited visibility. Uphill traffic has the right of way, but everyone should be prepared to stop and back up to the last wide spot if necessary.
