About
Camp Noren is one of three large group sites at Cedar Flat Group Campground in Inyo National Forest, situated near Westgard Pass at 7,300 feet elevation. The campground lies within an arid landscape of pinyon and juniper, with rabbit brush and sage dominating the surrounding terrain. Popular with academic institutions for geology field trips, the area offers proximity to White Mountain Peak (California's third highest at 14,246 feet) and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. The site accommodates up to 50 people and 12 vehicles, featuring a shade ramada, campfire ring, picnic table, and access to vault toilets. This is a dry camp with no potable water; the nearest source for water, food, firewood, or fuel is Big Pine, approximately 12 miles away. Campers should arrive fully prepared and self-sufficient. Access is via Highway 168, which is narrow and steep with a single-lane section offering very limited visibility. Technically uphill traffic has right-of-way, but all drivers should be prepared to stop and back up to the last wide spot if necessary. The junction with White Mountain Road (leading to the bristlecone pines) is about half a mile past the campground entrance.
Directions
From Big Pine, travel east on Highway 168 approximately 11.5 miles and turn left into the campground entrance. The junction with White Mountain Road is about 0.5 miles beyond the campground. Highway 168 is narrow and steep with a single-lane section of limited visibility. Uphill traffic technically has right-of-way, but be prepared to back up to a wide spot if necessary.
