About
Upper Sage Flat Campground provides a pleasant camping experience along the banks of Big Pine Creek at the base of a narrow canyon in the Eastern Sierra. Located just 9 miles west of Big Pine, the campground sprawls beneath shady Jeffrey pines and cottonwoods with 20 campsites featuring paved parking aprons, most 40 feet long. The creek is stocked annually with rainbow, brown, brook, and alpers trout, making it popular with anglers. Swimmers also enjoy the cool creek waters during summer months. The Big Pine Creek Trail, a 1.5-mile footpath from the campground, provides access to trails in the John Muir Wilderness, including routes to Palisades Glacier, the southernmost glacier in the contiguous United States. This is active bear country with all food storage in provided bear boxes required. The campground offers flush toilets, drinking water, picnic tables, and campfire rings. Most sites are reservable through Recreation.gov during peak season, with some first-come, first-served availability. Nearby attractions include the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest and Tinemaha Reservoir.
Directions
From Big Pine on US Highway 395, turn west at the yellow flashing traffic light onto Crocker Street (also called West Crocker Avenue or Big Pine Canyon Road). Continue for 9 miles to the campground on your left.
