About
Tuff Campground is situated along Rock Creek in the scenic Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, conveniently located just east of the Highway 395 and Tom's Place junction. At an elevation of 7,000 feet, it is lower than many of the region's campgrounds and is frequently one of the first to open in the Rock Creek area each spring, typically opening the last weekend in April to coincide with the first day of fishing season in the Sierras. The campground is named for the volcanic tuff rock formations that lie in and around the area. The 34 campsites are well spread out over three loops, with some sites situated in the shade along Rock Creek among aspens, cottonwoods, and Jeffrey pine trees, while others occupy more open sagebrush landscape. The clear, cold, and cascading Rock Creek runs alongside the campsites, providing a relaxing soundtrack for campers. All sites can accommodate RVs, trailers, and tents. Rock Creek and nearby Rock Creek Lake and Crowley Lake are hot spots for trout fishing, with catches potentially including brook, brown, rainbow, and stocked Alpers trout. The area's majestic scenery and challenging trails attract hikers and mountain bikers, while wildlife enthusiasts may spot black bear, mountain lions, mule deer, pine martin, pika, and numerous bird species. The campground is in active bear country, and all food must be secured in the provided bear boxes.
