About

Mt. Whitney Trailhead Ravine Campground sits at 8,360 feet elevation at the end of Whitney Portal Road, serving as the launch point for Mt. Whitney summit attempts via the main trail. Located in the ravine on the east side of the overflow parking lot, all sites are walk-in only with flat tent pads designed for hikers staging for early morning departures. The campground enforces a strict one-night stay limit. Bear-proof food lockers are provided and their use is mandatory. All food and scented items must be stored in the lockers, and trash must be disposed of in bear-proof receptacles. Vault toilets and potable water are available at the nearby parking lot. Quiet hours are 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Dogs are permitted but must remain leashed at all times. Camping in the parking lot is prohibited. Note that the Mount Whitney Zone itself is under an access restriction through June 18, 2027, which prohibits entry onto portions of the Mt. Whitney Trail and North Fork Lone Pine Creek Trail. The campground remains accessible when Whitney Portal Road is open, but hikers should verify trail access before planning summit attempts.
