About

Mt. Whitney Trailhead Ravine Campground, also known simply as Ravine Campground, is situated on the east side of the overflow parking area at Whitney Portal, approximately 12 miles west of Lone Pine via Whitney Portal Road. This walk-in campground caters specifically to hikers preparing for or returning from treks to Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States, as well as other destinations in the John Muir Wilderness. All campsites are walk-in only with camping prohibited in the parking lot itself. Each site includes a flat tent pad and bear-proof food storage locker, essential given the active bear presence in this area. Restrooms and water are located at the adjacent parking lot. The campground enforces a strict one-night stay limit to accommodate the high volume of hikers during the season. Whitney Portal Road typically closes for winter, usually from November through April or May depending on snow conditions, making the campground inaccessible during those months. During the operating season, visitors should be prepared for high-elevation conditions and heavy usage, particularly on weekends and during peak summer months.

Directions

From Highway 395 in Lone Pine, turn west at the stoplight onto Whitney Portal Road. Drive approximately 12 miles to Whitney Portal. Park in the overflow parking lot; campsites are walk-in from there.
