About

Lake Mary Campground is situated at 8,900 feet elevation among lodgepole pine trees on the northwest shore of Lake Mary, the largest and most developed of the 11 lakes in the Mammoth Lakes Basin. The campground features 48 sites spread across four loops that straddle the road, with some sites offering views of the lake and the dramatic 9,000 to 10,000-foot peaks of the John Muir Wilderness beyond. The facility is within walking distance of the lake and provides a convenient base for exploring the Eastern Sierra high country. Lake Mary receives the highest number of trout stocks in the Mammoth Lakes Basin and is renowned for its rainbow, brook, and brown trout fishing. A marina with boat rentals and a general store are located nearby. Swimming and wading are not permitted in the lake. While no trails begin directly in the campground, several popular hiking trails are easily accessible, including day hikes and backpacking routes into the John Muir Wilderness. The area is home to abundant wildlife including black bears, mountain lions, mule deer, pine marten, pika, and numerous bird species. Bear boxes are provided at all sites and must be used. The campground's high elevation location means it typically remains snowbound until late May or early June, and visitors traveling from lower elevations should allow time to acclimatize.
