About
Twin Lakes Campground sits at the base of 11,059-foot Mammoth Mountain in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, providing one of the most scenic and sought-after camping destinations in the Mammoth Lakes Basin. The facility features 94 campsites distributed across three loops, with Sections 1 and 2 located on the west side closer to the lakeshore, and Section 3 set upon a hill. Each site comes equipped with a picnic table, campfire ring, and mandatory bear-proof food storage locker. The campground's location on the shores of the 108-acre Twin Lakes makes it ideal for water-based recreation. Anglers can fish for rainbow, brook, and brown trout while enjoying views of a waterfall cascading into the lake. The calm waters are perfect for kayaking and canoeing, though motorboats are limited to electric motors only. The campground provides flush toilets and pressurized drinking water spigots throughout, and campers can walk to the nearby general store for boat rentals, camping supplies, and hot showers (fee-based). The surrounding lodgepole pine forest provides partial shade and privacy, while the high-elevation setting offers cooler temperatures during summer months. Several hiking trails are easily accessible, including a 4-mile trail on Mammoth Mountain and shorter nature trails around the lakes. The campground is also connected to the Lakes Basin Path and Lakefront Path, providing access to additional lakes and attractions in the area. The Mammoth Lakes Trolley provides convenient access to town without needing to drive. This is an active bear area, and proper food storage in the provided bear boxes is mandatory. The campground typically operates from late May or early June through mid-October, with exact dates dependent on snow conditions. Due to the high demand, advance reservations are strongly recommended, as Twin Lakes is known as one of the most difficult campgrounds to book in California.
Directions
From US Highway 395, turn west on State Highway 203 and drive approximately 7 miles through the town of Mammoth Lakes. Highway 203 becomes Main Street, then Lake Mary Road. Continue on Lake Mary Road past several lakes to reach the Twin Lakes cutoff. The campground is located 320 miles north of Los Angeles and 180 miles south of Reno, Nevada.
