About

McGee Creek Campground provides a pleasant, sunny camping location between Bishop and Mammoth Lakes in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. The campground sits at an elevation of 7,600 feet in an expanse of silvery white sagebrush near a meadow lined with aspens, offering outstanding views of high mountain peaks in the John Muir Wilderness. McGee Creek runs alongside the campground, with some sites situated along the banks. The campground features 28 reservable, open and sunny campsites, each equipped with a picnic shelter to provide shade in this relatively treeless environment. All roads and camping spurs are paved, making access straightforward. Bear-proof lockers are provided at each site for food storage, and firewood is available for sale on-site. Vault toilets and drinking water from faucets are available. The location's proximity to U.S. Highway 395 and the adjacent John Muir Wilderness makes it a hot spot for outdoor recreation. The McGee Creek Trailhead, just 2 miles from the campground, provides access to the McGee Canyon area of the John Muir Wilderness for hiking and horseback riding. The eastern Sierras are known for exceptional trout fishing, and both McGee Creek and nearby Crowley Lake (4 miles away) offer excellent fishing opportunities. The area's interesting geology also attracts rock hounds. The campground typically operates seasonally from May through September.

Directions

From U.S. Highway 395, take the McGee Creek exit located 8 miles south of Mammoth Lakes and 37 miles north of Bishop. Proceed 2 miles south up the paved McGee Creek Road. The campground is on the left.
