About

Palisades Group Campground is situated at 8,800 feet elevation at the bottom of a steep canyon adjacent to Rock Creek in Inyo National Forest. Originally a small family campground, it has been converted to serve as an overflow group site for parties unable to reserve the nearby Rock Creek Lake Group site. The facility features a private loop with five tables and campfire rings, surrounded by aspen and lodgepole pine trees. The eastern Sierra Nevada location provides exceptional trout fishing opportunities, with Rock Creek offering brook, brown, rainbow, and stocked Alpers trout. Backcountry streams yield golden trout for adventurous anglers. Several hiking trails wind through Rock Creek Canyon and around high-elevation alpine lakes, offering stunning scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities. The area is home to black bear, mountain lions, mule deer, pine martin, pika, and numerous bird species. Located 6 miles up Rock Creek Road from Highway 395, the campground is approximately 13 miles south of Mammoth Lakes and 30 miles north of Bishop. Due to its high elevation and the steep canyon location, the site is only accessible seasonally when snow conditions allow. This is an active bear area, and all food must be secured in provided bear boxes when not attended.

Directions

From Highway 395, take the Tom's Place exit (13 miles south of Mammoth Lakes or 30 miles north of Bishop). Turn onto Rock Creek Road and follow for approximately 6 miles to Palisades Group Campground on the right.
