About
Sherwin Creek Campground is located in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains within 2 miles of the full-service community of Mammoth Lakes. Set in a shady forest of Jeffrey pine and bordered by aspen-lined Sherwin Creek at 7,600 feet elevation, this large campground features 85 sites organized across three main loops plus a secluded walk-in tent loop on either side of the creek. Wild roses and other flowers bring color to the landscape in spring and early summer. The campground is particularly popular with off-road vehicle enthusiasts due to its proximity to motocross tracks and trails, especially during the annual Mammoth Motocross event in late June. Hikers will find access to the John Muir Wilderness via the Valentine Lake Trail and Sherwin Lakes Trail, both offering spectacular Sierra scenery. Anglers can fish for rainbow trout in the creek. The campground is accessed via 1.5 miles of two-lane gravel road and is located in active bear country with bear boxes provided at all sites. Mammoth Lakes offers full services and hosts events like the Jazz Jubilee in mid-July. Day trips to Yosemite National Park, Devils Postpile National Monument, and Mono Basin are easily accessible. Wildlife including black bear, mountain lions, mule deer, pine marten, and pika inhabit the surrounding mountains.
