About

Sage Flat Campground occupies a forested setting along Big Pine Creek in California's Eastern Sierra, within the Inyo National Forest. At 7,400 feet elevation, the campground provides relief from summer valley heat while offering easy access to the spectacular Big Pine Creek drainage and its glacier-fed waters. Most of the 28 campsites are shaded by mature pines and aspens, though the somewhat open layout means limited privacy between sites. The campground operates first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and a mandatory bear-proof food storage locker. This is active black bear territory, and all food and scented items must be secured in the provided bear boxes when not in immediate use. Potable drinking water is available from a hand pump, and vault toilets serve the campground. Big Pine Creek offers good trout fishing, and the area serves as a gateway to the John Muir Wilderness via Big Pine Creek Trail. The campground is one of several along the Big Pine Creek corridor, with Upper Sage Flat Campground located nearby. The 14-day maximum stay limit applies.

Directions

From Big Pine, turn west on Crocker Street and continue 8 miles west. The campground is on the left after entering the forested area.
