About

Bald Mountain Springs is a primitive dispersed camping area on Inyo National Forest land near Mammoth Lakes in Mono County, California. Situated at roughly 8,200 feet elevation, the site provides a remote camping experience in the Eastern Sierra. Unlike developed campgrounds, this area has no designated sites, no facilities, and no fees. Access is via Highway 120 (Tioga Pass Road, which is seasonally closed in winter) to Bald Mountain Road. The Forest Service recommends 4x4 high-clearance vehicles for Bald Mountain Road. The area is popular for dispersed camping during snow-free months, typically late spring through fall depending on conditions. As dispersed camping on Inyo National Forest, standard forest rules apply: campers may stay up to 14 consecutive days at one location and must obtain a free California Campfire Permit for any open flame including camp stoves. Bear-resistant food storage is required throughout the forest.

Directions

From Highway 395, take Highway 120 (Tioga Pass Road) west. After approximately 6 miles, turn right onto Bald Mountain Road, then left in 0.3 miles. Continue about 1.8 miles to the spring area. 4x4 high-clearance vehicle recommended.
