About
Ferguson Group Camp is part of Cedar Flat Group Campground, a trio of large group sites nestled among pinyon and juniper forest at approximately 7,300 feet elevation near Westgard Pass. The campground sits along Highway 168 east of Big Pine and serves as a base for exploring the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest and White Mountains. It has long been popular with academic institutions conducting geology field trips in the region. The site accommodates up to 35 people and includes a shade ramada, picnic table, campfire ring, and vault toilet. This is a primitive, dry campground with no potable water, electricity, or hookups. Campers must bring all water from Big Pine, 12 miles away. Access via Highway 168 is challenging: the road is narrow and steep with a single-lane section offering very limited visibility. While technically uphill traffic has right-of-way, all drivers should be prepared to back up to the last wide spot if necessary. During peak season from April 15 through October 15, reservations are required through Recreation.gov. Winter camping from October 16 through April 14 is first-come, first-served. A 14-day stay limit applies, and quiet hours are observed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Directions
From Big Pine, travel east on Highway 168 approximately 11.5 miles to the campground entrance on the left. The junction with White Mountain Road leading to the bristlecone pines is about 0.5 mile beyond the campground. Highway 168 is narrow and steep with a single-lane section having very limited visibility. Uphill traffic has the right-of-way, but all drivers should be prepared to stop and back up to the last wide spot if necessary.
