About

Big Pine Canyon Recreation Area offers two distinct group camping experiences along the scenic Big Pine Creek in Inyo National Forest. The Clyde Glacier Group Site can accommodate up to 25 guests with paved parking for two 35-foot vehicles and six 20-foot vehicles, while Palisade Glacier Group Site is tent-only for up to 25 people. Both sites feature campfire rings and grills, with vault toilets and hand-pump drinking water available. The campground sits in a spectacular glacier-carved canyon heralded for having both the largest and southernmost glaciers in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The North Fork Trail climbs past waterfalls through Jeffrey pine, manzanita and sage to Big Pine Lakes at around 10,000 feet elevation, offering views of Palisade Glacier. The South Fork Trail leads to small lakes fed by glacial waters from Norman Clyde and Middle Palisade Glaciers. Fishing is popular in Big Pine Creek and the nearby lakes, while climbers utilize the steep canyon walls. The campground operates seasonally and closes for winter due to snow and road conditions. Bear activity is common in the area, and bear-proof food storage boxes are provided and must be used. Equestrian facilities are available for campers with horses. The campground is located within a designated developed recreation area where dispersed camping is not permitted.
