About
Pumice Flat Group Campground is located in the scenic Reds Meadow Valley within Inyo National Forest, just west of Mammoth Lakes. Situated at 7,700 feet elevation in a lodgepole pine forest between two creeks, the campground offers four well-spaced group sites designed for larger parties seeking a high Sierra basecamp experience. The location provides exceptional access to some of California's most renowned wilderness areas. Nearby trailheads connect to the Ansel Adams Wilderness, Pacific Crest Trail, and John Muir Trail. A mandatory shuttle system operates during the season to transport hikers to various trailheads in the valley. Rainbow Falls, one of the Sierra's most spectacular waterfalls, is accessible from the nearby Reds Meadow area. Fishing opportunities exist in the North Fork of the San Joaquin River and surrounding lakes. The campground is located in an active bear area, and all sites are equipped with bear-proof food lockers that must be used for all food and scented items. The area features dramatic geologic landscapes including Devils Postpile National Monument, making it popular for photography and geological study. The Reds Meadow Pack Station and Resort, located about 2.5 miles away, offers horseback riding, a general store, and cafe services.
