Overview
Shasta County is located in Northern California and covers over 3,800 square miles of diverse terrain including mountains, forests, lakes, and valleys. The county is home to exceptional outdoor recreation centered around the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area, which includes Shasta Lake (California's largest reservoir with 365+ miles of shoreline) and Whiskeytown Lake. The Shasta-Trinity National Forest, California's largest national forest at 2.2 million acres, offers extensive dispersed camping opportunities, developed campgrounds, and water recreation. BLM lands provide additional free dispersed camping options, including the Shasta Campground near Chappie-Shasta OHV Area. As of summer 2025, Whiskeytown's main beaches (Brandy Creek, Oak Bottom, and East Beach) are open. Recent fire activity includes the Green Fire (July 2025) which led to temporary closures of Hirz Recreation Complex and evacuation warnings in certain zones, though containment progress has been made. CalFire's burn permit suspension was lifted in October 2025. Year-round campfire permits are required for dispersed camping. Water levels on Shasta Lake fluctuate, so campers should check with Shasta Recreation Company or the Shasta Lake Ranger Station for potential temporary campground closures. The county offers three incorporated cities (Redding, Anderson, and Shasta Lake) and serves as a gateway to Mount Shasta and the Cascade Range.
