About

Summit Lake South Campground occupies the south shore of Summit Lake at 6,700 feet elevation along Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway. The campground operates seasonally, typically from late June through late September, and contains three loops (C, D, and E) with 49 reservable sites designed primarily for tent camping, though small tent trailers are permitted. No RVs or larger trailers are allowed due to limited space and small parking areas. The location provides exceptional access to the park's trail network. The Cluster Lakes loop trail, a major route into the park's backcountry that passes several alpine lakes, begins at the nearby Summit Lake Ranger Station just a quarter-mile away. The campground is the closest developed camping area to Lassen Peak Trail, located eight miles away, which climbs to the summit of the 10,457-foot volcano. The hydrothermal area of Bumpass Hell lies within 10 miles. Birders and backpackers particularly favor this location for its access to alpine lake country. Facilities include vault toilets, seasonal potable water, fire rings, picnic tables, and bear-proof food storage lockers at each site. An amphitheater hosts ranger-led educational programs during the operating season. Each site accommodates up to three tents, six people, and two vehicles. The campground requires advance reservations through Recreation.gov throughout the entire season, with bookings available up to six months ahead. Sites that are not snow-free by opening or become inaccessible due to early snow may result in shortened seasons. The park entrance fee is separate from camping fees.
