Madrone Campground
Closed — Closed by Forest Order for public safety through December 31, 2026.
About
Located east of Shasta Lake in Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Madrone Campground offers 10 remote, forested campsites perfect for visitors seeking solitude and OHV recreation opportunities. This primitive campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees required. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with vault toilets available. As a pack-in, pack-out facility, campers must bring all their own supplies including water (which can be treated or filtered from nearby sources) and pack out all trash. The campground can accommodate trailers up to 16 feet. Access requires traveling approximately 18 miles on Fenders Ferry Road (Road 27), an unimproved dirt road that can be rough and challenging. The shaded, forested setting provides a peaceful retreat and serves as an excellent base camp for exploring the surrounding area's OHV trails and backcountry. Due to its remote location and primitive facilities, this campground is best suited for self-sufficient campers comfortable with rustic conditions.
Directions
From I-5, take Highway 299 East 31 miles to Fenders Ferry Road (Road 27). On Fenders Ferry Road, drive approximately 18 miles. Note: Fenders Ferry is a rough, unimproved dirt road.
