Open

Open for the season. The campground typically operates May 1 through November 1. First-come, first-served only with no advance reservations. 14-day stay limit. Portions of the adjacent Ah-Di-Na area may be restricted for salmon recovery research.

About

Situated on an historic site used by Native American tribes and later by the Whittier, Fitzhugh, and William Randolph Hearst families, Ah-Di-Na Campground occupies a scenic setting along the Lower McCloud River at 2,300 feet elevation. The 16-site campground features flush toilets, drinking water from faucets, and each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. Visitors must pack out all trash as no garbage service is provided. The Lower McCloud River is a world-renowned native trout fishery, making this campground a favorite destination for anglers. California Fish and Game regulations for this section of river allow only the use of artificial lures with barbless hooks. Visitors can explore remnants of the area's rich history, including building foundations, rock walls, and an orchard that still produces fruit. Access to Ah-Di-Na requires driving 4 miles on a very rough, rocky dirt road from Lake McCloud. High-clearance vehicles are strongly recommended, and trailers, motorhomes, and low-clearance vehicles should not attempt this route. Exercise caution near the McCloud River due to potential high-level surges from dam releases and cold water temperatures that pose hypothermia risk.

Directions

From the McCloud Ranger Station, turn right on SR 89. Go approximately 1/4 mile to the left turn lane. Turn left and go approximately 10 miles to Lake McCloud. Stay on the paved road around the lake. In 3 miles, look for the AH-DI-NA sign. Turn right onto the dirt road and drive 4 miles uphill to the top, then continue down to the campground on the left. Road is very rough; high-clearance vehicles required.
