About

Originally built in 1937 by the Forest Service and Civilian Conservation Corps, Hirz Mountain Lookout sits atop a 3,540-foot peak offering some of the most spectacular views in Northern California. The steel K-brace tower, added in 1949, stands 20 feet above ground level and provides full 360-degree visibility of Mt. Shasta's snow-covered peak to the north, Mt. Lassen to the southeast, and the narrow blue-green ribbon of Shasta Lake's McCloud Arm below. The lookout interior features two twin beds, cabinets, and dressers. A picnic table sits below the tower, and a vault toilet is located in a separate building. There is no potable water, electricity, or cooking facilities. Visitors may use a portable gas stove with a valid California Campfire Permit. Wood and charcoal fires are prohibited. All trash must be packed out. Access is challenging. Road 35N04 is a steep, rocky, single-lane dirt road requiring a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. The final quarter-mile to the lookout is closed to vehicles and must be hiked on foot over rocky, steep terrain. Sturdy footwear with good ankle support is recommended. Rattlesnakes and black bears frequent the area.

Directions

From Redding, take Interstate 5 north approximately 20 miles to Gilman Road (exit 698). Turn right and follow Gilman Road approximately 5 miles to road 35N04. Turn left onto 35N04, a steep, rocky dirt road requiring high-clearance 4WD. Drive 5 miles at low speed to the locked gate. The final quarter-mile to the lookout is foot traffic only.
