About

Castle Crags State Park Campground is nestled in a secluded forested area beneath dramatic 6,000-foot granite spires that rise from the landscape like towers of a medieval fortress. Located in the Klamath Mountains, the campground features 76 developed campsites and six environmental campsites, each equipped with a picnic table, food locker, and fire ring. The park encompasses 4,350 acres with 28 miles of hiking trails ranging from accessible paths along Root Creek to the challenging Crags Trail leading to Castle Dome with breathtaking views of Mount Shasta and the surrounding wilderness. The Sacramento River flows through the park offering swimming and fishing opportunities, with several access points including a pedestrian suspension bridge at the Riverside area. The park borders Castle Crags Wilderness in Shasta-Trinity National Forest and serves as a popular respite for Pacific Crest Trail hikers. The 160-million-year-old granite pluton was exposed through glaciation during the Pleistocene era, creating the distinctive spires and domes visible today. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with self-registration required.
