About
Sims Flat Campground occupies a scenic riverside location along the Sacramento River in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. At 1,600 feet elevation, the campground offers 19 individual sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, accommodating both tent campers and those with mid-sized RVs or trailers. The setting provides easy access to one of California's premier trout streams, renowned among fly fishers. The campground holds historical significance as the site of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp from the 1930s. Interpretive signs throughout the area tell the story of the CCC workers who built a suspension bridge spanning the Sacramento River. Modern visitors can still appreciate this legacy while enjoying the natural surroundings. Beyond fishing, the area attracts whitewater enthusiasts during spring runoff season and train buffs who come to watch Union Pacific freight trains rumble through the dramatic canyon. The campground operates seasonally from late April through mid-November on a first-come, first-served basis.
Directions
From Mt. Shasta city, take I-5 south approximately 20 miles to the Sims exit. Turn left under the freeway and drive another mile to the bridge crossing the Sacramento River. The campground entrance is on the right, just past the bridge.
