About

Sheep Camp Primitive Campground sits in the heart of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, approximately 17 miles west of Redding and three and a half hours north of Sacramento. The four tent-only sites are tucked into mixed oak, pine, and fir woodlands with cliffside views overlooking Brandy Creek. Each campsite includes a bear-resistant storage locker, picnic table, metal fire pit with swing-arm barbecue grill, and lamp pole. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the recreation area's trail network. The Brandy Creek Trail and Papoose Pass Trail are nearby, and Shasta Bally Road provides access to the highest point in Whiskeytown at 6,199 feet. Several waterfalls are accessible from nearby trailheads. The sites require a short walk of approximately 25-30 feet from the small parking area. This is a primitive facility with no potable water or electricity. Campers must bring their own drinking water and pack accordingly. A shared ADA-accessible vault toilet serves all four sites. No trailers, motorhomes, cab-over campers, or RVs are permitted. All food and scented items must be stored in the provided bear lockers when not in immediate use.

Directions

From Redding, head west on Highway 299 to Whiskeytown. Access the campground via Brandy Creek Road, a narrow and winding gravel roadway. Sites require a short walk from the parking area.
