Cave Campground is a developed Forest Service campground located along Hat Creek in Lassen National Forest, just north of the Highway 44/89 junction in Old Station, California. The campground features 46 first-come, first-served sites situated at 4,390 feet elevation, making it a popular destination for anglers seeking access to Hat Creek's renowned wild trout fishing. Each campsite includes a picnic table, fire ring, and barbecue grill, and can accommodate RVs, trailers, and tents. The campground's location directly across from Subway Cave, a ⅓-mile lava tube, provides unique opportunities to explore the area's volcanic geology. Day hiking trails are abundant in the surrounding area, with interpretive information available at the nearby Old Station Visitor Center. The campground offers flush toilets and potable water from faucets during the operating season. Free day-use parking is available for anglers and visitors accessing Hat Creek. Cave Campground operates seasonally from April through October, with opening and closing dates dependent on weather and snow conditions. The facility enforces a 14-day stay limit and requires campers to keep pets on leash. Check-in is after 3:00 PM and check-out is before 2:00 PM. The standard overnight fee is $16 per night with an additional $5 fee for a second vehicle (maximum two vehicles per site).
