About
Cave Campground occupies a scenic stretch of Hat Creek in the Lassen National Forest, positioned directly across Highway 89 from the famous Subway Cave lava tube. The campground sits at roughly 4,390 feet elevation in a mixed conifer forest, offering shaded sites with direct access to one of Northern California's premier trout streams. Hat Creek is known for wild and trophy trout fishing, drawing anglers throughout the season. The area serves as a hub for volcanic exploration. Subway Cave, a 1,300-foot lava tube, is a short walk from camp. The Spatter Cones Nature Trail, a 1.5-mile interpretive loop, departs from across the highway. The Old Station Visitor Center is nearby for maps, permits, and local information. Lassen Volcanic National Park's northwest entrance lies about 12 miles west. All sites are equipped with fire rings, BBQ grills, and picnic tables. Flush toilets and potable water are provided. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a 14-day stay limit. Check-in is after 3 PM and check-out is before 2 PM.
