Overview

Summit County, Colorado is located in the heart of the White River National Forest, with approximately 80% of the county's land managed by the Dillon Ranger District. The forest is currently open with moderate fire danger ratings across all ranger districts. As of September 2025, fire restrictions have been lifted for the White River National Forest. The area offers extensive recreation opportunities including developed campgrounds (Prospector, Heaton Bay, Blue River, and others around Dillon Reservoir and Green Mountain Reservoir), dispersed camping throughout national forest lands, and backcountry access to wilderness areas including portions of the Eagles Nest and Ptarmigan Peak Wilderness. Note that Sapphire Point North Overlook and parking area is closed through November 15, 2025 for maintenance. Campgrounds typically close for the season in early October (around October 7). The county sits at high elevation (around 9,000 feet at Dillon Reservoir) and offers year-round recreation. Summer road openings typically occur in mid-June. Dispersed camping is permitted but limited to 28 days within any continuous 60-day period. Contact the Dillon Ranger District office at (970) 468-5400 for current conditions and dispersed camping locations.
