About

Hewinta Guard Station is an administrative facility of the USFS Evanston-Mountain View Ranger District, situated at approximately 9,505 feet elevation in Summit County, Utah, within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The station is located near the Bear River-Smiths Fork Trail corridor in the remote High Uintas backcountry. Historically, the main telephone line from Whitney Guard Station to Hewinta Guard Station followed the Bear River-Smiths Fork Trail route. Today the facility is used periodically by Forest Service field crews as a base camp for projects in the surrounding wilderness area, including fish population management work in the West Fork Smiths Fork drainage. This is an administrative guard station, not a public rental cabin. The property is not listed on Recreation.gov and is not available for overnight camping or cabin rental by the public. Visitors seeking cabin accommodations in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest should consider the Mirror Lake Guard Station, Payson Lakes Guard Station, or the district's yurt rentals at Bear Claw, East Fork, Lily Lake, Ridge, or Boundary Creek.
