About
Bear Claw Yurt is a backcountry shelter operated by the Bear River Outdoor Recreation Alliance (BRORA), a non-profit organization managing six yurts in Utah's High Uintas. Located at approximately 8,700 feet elevation on the north slope of the Uinta Mountains, the yurt offers views of Moffit Peak to the west and is connected to other BRORA yurts via groomed cross-country ski trails. The 20-foot yurt accommodates up to 8 guests with three sets of bunk beds. Amenities include a wood-burning stove for heat, a propane cooking stove with fuel provided, a hard-wired gas lantern, and a woodshed stocked with pre-cut firewood and axes. Kitchen utensils, cookware, and basic supplies are provided. An outhouse is located approximately 20 feet from the yurt. There is no running water or electricity; guests must filter stream water or melt snow. Access during winter requires a roughly 2-mile trek from the trailhead near Bear River Lodge, accessed from Evanston, Wyoming via Millcreek Road (FR58). The Mirror Lake Highway is closed from the Utah side during winter, making Wyoming the only access point. Summer access opens in late April when road conditions improve.
Directions
From Evanston, Wyoming, head south on Highway 150 (Mirror Lake Highway) and turn onto Millcreek Road (FR58). The trailhead is near Bear River Lodge. The yurt is approximately 2 miles from the trailhead via groomed trail. Note: Winter access is only from the Wyoming side as the Mirror Lake Highway is closed from Utah.
