China Meadows Trailhead Campground

Closed — Closed for the winter season. The campground typically opens in late May and closes in early September due to snow at the 10,000-foot elevation. Reservations become available several months before the season opens on Recreation.gov.

About

China Meadows Trailhead Campground is a small, remote campground located at 10,000 feet elevation on the northern slope of the Uinta Mountains in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Accessed via Wyoming State Highway 410 and gravel forest roads from Mountain View, Wyoming, the campground provides 11 single campsites in a timbered setting near China Lake. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with vault toilet facilities serving the campground. The campground functions as a trailhead access point to the High Uinta Wilderness, making it popular with backpackers, anglers, and wilderness enthusiasts. The surrounding area features numerous alpine lakes offering fishing and canoeing opportunities, along with an extensive network of hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and off-road vehicle trails. The High Uinta Wilderness encompasses some of Utah's most pristine backcountry, with soaring peaks, pristine lakes, rivers, and streams. Due to its high elevation and remote location, the campground operates seasonally from late May through early September. The area receives heavy snowfall in winter, making access impossible during colder months. During the operating season, the campground offers both reservable sites and first-come, first-served sites. Gates open at 7am and close at 10pm, with quiet hours from 10pm to 6am. Campers should bring all necessary water for their stay and be prepared to pack out all trash.
