Overview

The Fremont-Winema National Forest is a 2.3 million-acre forest in south-central Oregon formed from the 2002 administrative merger of the Fremont and Winema National Forests. The forest is currently open for recreation with Christmas tree permits available. The Klamath Ranger District Office is temporarily closed, but the forest itself remains accessible. There is no active fire danger rating at this time, though a forest order (06-02-25-01) is in effect through the region. The heavily-timbered western portion borders Crater Lake National Park and the Cascade Range, while the eastern section extends into Oregon's Outback and the semi-arid highland belt. The forest offers extensive dispersed camping throughout, along with developed campgrounds (most are rustic with minimal amenities), rentable fire lookouts and cabins, and over 50 trails. Activities include fishing, hunting, boating, skiing, snowmobiling, biking, horseback riding, and bird watching. The forest contains four designated Wilderness areas and is traversed by major migratory bird flyways. Wildlife includes mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk, pronghorn antelope, black bears, mountain lions, and bobcats. Headquarters are located in Lakeview with seven ranger districts managing the area.
