About
Deadhorse Lake Campground is a remote high-elevation destination in Oregon's Fremont-Winema National Forest, situated on a 31-acre lake at 7,372 feet. The campground features 16 sites: 9 single tent/trailer sites closer to the water and 7 group sites positioned further from the lakeshore. Every site includes a picnic table and fire grill. A vault toilet serves the campground, though potable water is not currently available. The lake offers excellent fishing opportunities with rainbow trout regularly stocked by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Swimming and boating are popular activities, though only non-motorized or electric motors are permitted with a strict 5 mph speed limit. A boat launch and separate day-use area provide additional access to the water. The nearby Lakes Trail System offers hiking opportunities for those wanting to explore the surrounding wilderness. Access requires driving approximately 1 hour 20 minutes from Paisley via Forest Service roads. The campground operates seasonally from mid-May through mid-October, weather permitting. All sites are first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. Weekends and holidays fill quickly due to the campground's popularity among anglers and those seeking a secluded mountain lake experience.
