People can take the following precautions to protect their health: - Follow local burn restrictions to prevent deteriorating air quality. - Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during periods of poor air quality. - People with heart or lung problems and young children are especially vulnerable. These people should stay indoors while smoke levels are high. - Use certified High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters in indoor heating, ventilation, cooling and air purification systems. - Avoid using wood-burning stoves and other sources of indoor smoke if possible. About

Located 45 minutes northwest of Lakeview, Oregon, the Cottonwood Complex is one of the busiest campgrounds in the southeast zone of the Fremont-Winema National Forest. The high-elevation setting features western white pine, ponderosa, and white fir providing shade, while aspens turn golden in autumn. The campground offers 22 total sites including four walk-in tent-only sites and one dedicated horse camp with its own corral, water area, and trailer turn-around. Cottonwood Meadows Lake is the centerpiece of the recreation area, stocked with rainbow and brook trout and offering excellent fishing opportunities. Two day-use areas and a boat launch provide lake access, though only non-motorized boats and electric motors are permitted. The campground serves as a gateway to hiking trails including the Cottonwood Loop Trail and Fremont National Recreation Trail. Deer are frequently spotted throughout the campground, and black bear sightings occur occasionally, making proper food storage essential. The high elevation means the area is generally snow-free mid-June through mid-October. A seasonal camp host is present during peak season, and the rustic facilities include vault toilets and picnic tables with fire rings at each site.

Directions

From Lakeview, travel west on Oregon Highway 140 toward Bly. Turn right on Forest Service Road 3870 and continue north. Follow signs to the campground. Located approximately 45 minutes northwest of Lakeview.
